They maybe persons deprived of liberty (PDLs), yet it doesn’t mean they no longer belong to the society. They still belong, there’s no doubt about that.
In fact, they contribute well in handicraft industry and the handicraft they make reflects their great skills and potentials.
“Our PDLs deserve second chance, that’s why they are being reformed,” said Laguna Rep. Ann Matibag who also used the handicraft bag made by the PDLs during President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr’s State of the Nation’s Address (SONA) last Monday.
The lady lawmaker opted to carry a handcrafted bag created by PDL when she showed up during the opening of the second regular session of the 20th Congress in an utter show of support for the welfare of the PDLs.
According to Rep. Matibag, the finely-crafted bag reflects a belief that every person is capable of making turnaround and transformation if given the right opportunity and support.
“By using the products they painstakingly create, we restore their dignity,” added Miss Matibag, Chairperson of the House Committee on Women and Gender Equality and president of Zonta Club of Laguna.
Matibag said they continue to push programs focusing on livelihood, skills development and rehabilitation of the marginalized sectors.
“These include launching the products made by PDLs in preparation for their return to their families and the society,” said Matibag.
Supporting the products designed and created by PDLs is not only a recognition of their skills, but also a recognition of every person’s capability to reform and start all over again.
By opting to use bag handcrafted by PDL during the first day of session at the House of Representatives, Matibag reinforces her unequivocal stand that a genuine service to the public gives hope, restore dignity and chance for all.
